- Abstract
The model legume Medicago truncatula is an autogamous annual species. The most characteristic feature of M. truncatula is its ability to enter two important plant-microbe symbioses with soil microbes leading to the development of nitrogen-fixing root nodules and the formation of an arbuscular mycorrhiza. In addition, M. truncatula is a useful model to investigate biotic and abiotic stress conditions as well as the formation of protein-rich seeds. An advanced genome project led to the identification of a large part of the M. truncatula gene space, and comprehensive collections of transcript sequences are available. Several mutant platforms in conjunction with transgenic approaches allow the functional characterization of candidate genes. Comparative genomics allows transfer of knowledge to agriculturally relevant crop species.
